Humanist ist Rob Marshall, ein englischer Musiker, Songwriter und Produzent. Marshall und Mark Lanegan kennen sich seit einer Soulsavers-Tour 2008; 2016 schickt Marshall per Email Songideen an Lanegan, der Lyrics dazu schreibt, und so erscheint Marshall bei der Hälfte der Songs von „Gargoyle“ (2017) als Co-Autor. Auf „Somebody’s Knocking“ (2019) setzen Lanegan und Marshall die Zusammenarbeit fort. Für sein Humanist-Projekt kann Marshall neben Lanegan so illustre Namen wie Dave Gahan und Peter Hayes (Black Rebel Motorcycle Club) gewinnen.
